NEWS: SAW SERIES

Hi, welcome to Slash it, my name is Jared. This is the latest news on the upcoming movie, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” as well as the Saw series as a whole.

When Saw ended with “Saw the final chapter” we all thought that this would have been the last time we would see the Saw series on the big screen. That changed when “Jigsaw'' (2017) released, breathing a new breath of fresh air into the series and showing that the Saw series was not afraid of straying away from the previous storyline that ended in the seventh movie. “Jigsaw” is a spin-off without officially being a spin-off, because this Jigsaw killer is a copycat of John Kramer from the original films. By jumping the shark and skewing off the straight storyline with Saws 1-7 they opened themselves up to creating new entries that may not be directly related to the original films. That’s where “Spiral: From the book of saw” comes in. Chris Rock in the lead role plays a detective who gets stuck in what appears to be yet another copycat of Jigsaw’s messed up game. This movie which was originally supposed to be released on May 15th got pushed back to May 21, 2021. This got pushed up a week due to the pandemic and many theatres re-opening. How this will affect horror movies that were pushed back is a very interesting concept to think about. Looking at you “Halloween Kills” (that will never happen lol).

Well, we have some things that you may not have heard about that I thought were very interesting. We will begin with what was one of the most interesting things I’ve heard that’s managed to slip under the radar: “Saw X” is confirmed to be in development. The reason I’m so excited for this and think it’s so interesting is that (I’m not going to spoil it for people who haven’t seen Saw Seven) with the amazing ending of “Saw Seven: The Final Chapter”, I think this movie has the potential to be one of my favorites. If this movie is a direct sequel, and they do choose to go down the road that was teased at the end of Saw Seven, we have the potential to see a resurgence in saw movies to the extent that the original run was. There is no plot or any idea what this movie will be about, but because the original writers and directors of the first Saw movie are working on Spiral, there may be potential that they are working on Saw X; in fact, it's more than likely due to their involvement in Spiral. Please skip to the next paragraph if you haven’t seen the first seven saw films, as I will be spoiling them here. If you’ve seen the first Saw movie you’ll remember Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who ends up sawing off his own leg and crawling out into the hallway outside the bathroom the main characters are stuck in. Well, it turns out that he survived bleeding out and became Jigsaw's accomplice; this reveal is the biggest twist of all the Saw movies by far. The way it comes out of nowhere but isn’t completely unbelievable is actually very surprising for such a soap drama-Esque movie franchise. I’m hoping that we will see him as he transforms into the jigsaw role since we never really got to see him in action, only in the flashbacks that the Saw movies tended to rely heavily on in the later films. Dr. Gordon coming back as the true antagonist is one of the things that solidified Saw as such an iconic franchise, and I’m hoping that they use that fact to their advantage in “Saw X”.

This isn’t as much of breaking news as the others, but Twenty One Savage released a song that we can assume will be used as the beginning or ending credits. It uses the iconic Saw theme as its backing before the beat kicks in. This will be the song that will define this movie, because of the style of the song it is; it feels weirdly new for what feels like a slightly outdated franchise, but I’m hoping with things like this, the Saw franchise will become popular for the next generation who never saw the originals in the theatres (myself being one of them).

This piece of news is actually very interesting and makes me extremely ecstatic. In April of 2021, it was announced that Lionsgate was meeting to discuss creating a TV show based on “Spiral: From the Book of Saw”. The reason this is so exciting to me is that while the Saw series are all movies, they almost feel and are written to be feature film-length soap dramas. They feel and are directed exactly like what a soap drama about a deranged serial murderer who has some faulty logic in why he chooses his victim would look like. I’m hoping that the project gets greenlit and that they do end up moving forward with it, because the Saw franchise would benefit and do amazing as a TV series. While there is nothing in confirmation, I do believe that the way Spiral will play out will do incredibly well at ending it where a TV series can pick it up, and make it so with Saw X they have the freedom to do whatever they chose; they won’t have to decide between continuing Spiral’s story or Saw seven’s story. I think it would be interesting if they even decided to make their own entirely different story. Whichever way they decide, and however “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” and the tv series goes, I’m excited that we are finally seeing new Saw content after many years.
